
Spirit, citrus and sugar—the holy trinity of classic cocktail ingredients—combine to form the sour, one of the oldest types of cocktail. The first printed recipe appeared around 1862, although by whose hand is lost to history. The original incarnation of the drink called for whiskey, lemon juice, sugar and egg white, an ingredient that tames the tart flavor and creates a richer, smoother texture.

.75 oz. | Demerara syrup |
.5 oz. | Lemon juice |
.5 oz. | Lime juice |
1 | Egg white |
3 dashes | Angostura bitters |
1 | Orange peel |
1 | Maraschino cherry |
Instructions
01 | Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously without ice.* |
02 | Once the egg white is frothy, add ice and shake again to chill. |
03 | Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a cherry. |
*Pro tip: The “dry shake” followed by shaking again with fresh ice best brings the ingredients together into one cohesive package.

Instructions
01 | Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix thoroughly while diluting 5 ice cubes. |
02 | Refrigerate until cold. |
03 | Mix again before serving, and pour 3–4 oz. of mix over ice and garnish with and orange slice and cherry. |
